Are your roots telling you something?

Roots. So much of how we interpret events today depends on what we learned as children and all the experiences we have accumulated along the way. In the Mastery of Love Dom Miguel Ruiz explains that it is not only what we have experienced in life but what our ancestors experienced. Those are the lessons they hand on to the next generation. That generation adds their own layer to the lessons and passes that along. Like the tree our roots grow, our story is added ring by ring to sustain and nourish the growth of our family and our self and our society.

Sometimes our roots and our history feel like they are hiding something. Other times stories and events in families and cultures leaves us feeling exposed. All we can do is hang on, continue to grow and alter the story as more is revealed. The events in the world today feel like they are exposing our uncertainties and fears. We need to reassess on a daily basis our own beliefs as well as our beliefs as a culture.During these strange times we may be assessing how we want our actions to influence our society. And then we, like the tree will know how far back in our ancestry the truth lies and what it is we must do today. What beliefs will we shed and what beliefs will sustain us are all being revealed in these challenging times.

I look at this picture of a very tall tree with half its roots exposed by the shifting sands of the dunes on Lake Ontario. In time those same roots may be covered again. The tree will be there one way or another. Trees shed their leaves because carrying that heavy load will hurt them during the winter. What do you need to shed this fall? What beliefs are deep in your roots that sustain you or limit you? A tarot reading helps you find the truth and helps you shift that truth from your ancestors’ beliefs to your own. You can schedule your reading right here https://www.timetrade.com/book/VLZP6 or give us a call.

Dream a little dream of?

Do you remember falling in love? Do you remember sharing all your dreams with that person? Do you remember the excitement of realizing that the two of you shared so much? And do you remember the promises you made to that person way back when? Or maybe it was just a week ago?

When was the last time you sat down with that special person and shared your dreams? When was the last time you took a look at your own dreams? Have they changed? Have you changed? Have you and your partner spent any time lately listening to each other's dreams and hopes?

People come to see me to find out what is going on in their relationship. Often they don't know what is going on in their own mind. How can their partner know if they don't? Spend some time with your heart and mind. Let the two of them have a good chat and tune up your dreams, hopes and desires for yourself. How does your partner fit into those dreams? Have you shared these things with the person you live with and promised to love and honor?

When we are too busy to tune-up our hopes and dreams and listen to our own heart, soul and mind we cheat ourselves out of love and happiness. When we get clear on these things we can share them with our partner. When we sit down and dream with each other we can truly live, laugh and love.

A reading often helps people remember many wonderful things and let go of what no longer serves them or their relationships. Dream, dream, dream.....and share those wild and wonderful thoughts with someone who matters a lot to you.

You Can't Make Old Friends

Today I am thinking of my sister-in-law who lost her friend last week. This was the friend that had been with her since public school days. They were still very much in each other's life. Maralee posted the lovely song by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton "You Can't Make Old Friends" in tribute to their friendship. A love like that helps heals the wounds of loss.
Tonight I will be having supper with two old friends. We make the effort to stay in touch with each other too. There is a comfort in knowing these two women for such a long time. They know my history and stories. I know theirs. We will laugh, we will know, we will just be tonight.
I do find though that these long term friendships guide me in making new friends. When new people come into my life and feel comfortable and easy to be with, I an eager to develop that old friend feeling. Friends, spending time with people who feel good to be around, that warms my heart on these cold winter days.
Today I am so happy to have old friends to share the day with. I am also happy that I can receive the gift of new friends who show me new journeys and joy.
May the blessing of friendship guide you today.

Tarot Course: Be Fearless, Be Kind, Be Happy June 8, 15 & 22, 2015

It is International Tarot Day today, May 25th!

This seems like a great day to let you know about a course Marilyn Shannon is teaching in Kingston on June 8, 15 and 22, 2015

Tarot helps us see problems and more importantly it helps us see all the possible solutions to those problems. The last half of the Major Arcana in the Tarot often deal with fearful and difficult lessons in life. Those cards also show us how to be fearless, kind and happy as we change and grow.

Marilyn will be leading a dynamic discussion on Tarot cards 12 through 21. Specifically we will study the Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, Devil, Tower, Star, Moon, Sun, Judgement and World cards. We will also use your choice of other oracle cards to add to the reading you will be doing for yourself. You will work on personal issues and share with one other person as you read for each other. We will also be making your own Oracle card to help you move forward being fearless, kind and happy.

There is only room for 12 people at Marilyn's and six of those seats are already spoken for. Cost is $90 payable in advance to info@kingstonpsychic.com at Paypal or by email money transfer. $90

No prior experience with Tarot or Oracle cards is necessary. We start where you are. Bring a tarot deck and another oracle deck if you have them. Marilyn has extras for you to borrow. We have fun at Marilyn's on Mondays.

613-549-2438 or info@kingstonpsychic.com today to reserve your spot in this hands on Tarot class.

Fearless + Kind = Happy when we use Tarot

How did I get to happy from where I was using tarot as a key tool? Tarot showed me the way. Tarot showed me how to be fearless about leading the life that was meaningful and rich to me, I did the leg work and I was kind. When I wobbled as I did just last week preparing this presentation I turned to the tarot and stilled the old voices of hell revving up in my head. I took my hand out of the cookie jar and stashed the credit card because those activities after a while are simply not kind.
I thought about my accomplishments and how I help people and how they help me. The voice that I chose to listen to was happy, fearless and kind spreading into content. It is interesting that two wand cards showed up in my three card spread. Author Rose Gwain states in “Discovering Your Self Through the Tarot” that we feel content when we are in alignment with our fire energy. For me that equates to being happy.

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.” Dennis Waitley

Again using the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert I pulled the third card of this spread for: What does happy mean or look like for me at this time? Up popped the Child of Fire. There he is with his cat at his side toasting his hands over an open fire. Glee and curiosity are written all over his face. And isn’t that just the picture of happiness? Tarot offers me the gift of spiritual connection, curiosity, learning, connection and warmth every time I pick up the deck. My business has grown beyond my wildest dreams. My personal life is rich with people and connections. My eldest son summed it up one day as I was vacuuming the house. He said “I didn’t know that you could vacuum without yelling Mom!” I laughed. I didn’t know I could either and it feels great. Tarot helps us find answers, connect to our community and our spiritual path. I am a student of life warming to the idea of living life as an adventure. Please pull a card and share it with us here in the comments.

And finally here are five questions using the suits that you might enjoy answering:
1.   How does the suit of cups help you to intuitively see what else is happening in a situation so that you can respond with care and kindness?
2.   How does the suit of Wands help you find contentment within so that you can respond with kindness?
3.   How does the suit of Pentacles help you keep your feet on the ground and look after the basics and be kind to yourself?
4.   How does the suit of Swords help you see your own words and find a the kinder path?
5.   How does the tarot foster a kind way of interacting with others?

Tarot + Happy

HappyTarot + Fearless + Kind =Happy. Now there is a mathematical formula that I can work with. How about you? Tarot gave me the guidance to see what might be. Sometimes it was not pretty at all. When the Hanged Man and the Five of Pentacles were permanent residences in my readings things were not feeling very wonderful. The Five of Pentacles even showed up at a Readers Studio conference to answer the question of “What does love mean to you?” And the worst of it was that card made perfect sense! It makes perfect sense to many clients who find love as an empty, lonely and bereft place.

Yikes! It was a wakeup call for me that something was still wrong with my spirit. Thank you tarot for showing me this. Being happy in today’s world takes a lot of awareness. We need to pay attention to the triggers, the memories and the habits of old that derail happiness. We need to work from a place of abundance, of being enough, of loving life enough to engage in it fully right now.

How am I happy today? Tarot has helped me find a spiritual path that means I don’t have to drown my fears in wine today. My sons come to me when they need help and we can support each other even when we don’t agree whole heartedly. My clients feel supported and witnessed. Students in my home feel that they are safe and free of being judged. We can learn and share. I host a TV show on local television where I can introduce this community to the larger community. It is an important link I believe. Love is no longer a complicated thing. Love is or it is not. Being kind in love makes it much simpler to enjoy life. It is possible to be happy and content knowing that there are ways to deal with any situation. Tarot has given me a community of like-minded souls in my life.

Best of all the people in my life who do not love tarot and the metaphysical world like I do have come to respect that it is part of my life in a big way. Walking the tarot walk, talking the tarot talk fearlessly and kindly has brought so much happiness in to my life that I will never again give this up.

Pull a card for what happy looks like in your life today. Share it here if you like.

Fearless Questions:What is it about using tarot cards that helps you find your fearless being? How can those tough cards show you how to be fearless? How do blocks and challenges in the tarot bring out your fearless reader? How do you approach reading for someone who intimidates, concerns or worries you?How do you deal with the tough stuff in a tarot reading? How does being fearless and using tarot help you know when to hold them and know when to fold them? Or more precisely when to take action and when to wait?

Kind Questions:Can tarot teach us the language of kindness? Can tarot show us where we are kind and where we might need to be kind?Do you find kindness something that is worthwhile in your life? What is the kindest card in the deck as far as you see today? Why? What does it tell you today about you?

Tarot + Kindness

Yet it was kindness that opened me back up to living life. As I opened so too did my intuitive gifts and the need to share them with others. As I became softer and kinder people started to trust me in ways that being tough had denied me. As I found kindness my life of fear, perfection and anger disappeared. The tarot and working with other people gives me the opportunity to be kind daily.

Kindness has boundaries. It is not about giving so much of me that there is nothing left of me. It is offering what I can and letting the client take what they need if and when they need it. I am not attached to outcomes only in delivering the message as it is presented during the reading. Kindness lets me hear and witness a person’s pain without being destroyed myself. Kindness is what people need today: to be heard, witnessed, supported and acknowledged. This all happens in a reading. That is what tarot cards can offer when we ask them for guidance.

The Five of Wands from the Gaian Tarot came up to answer the question of what does kindness mean to me now?  Here is a man belching fire from his mouth. The fire appears to be full of demons and gargoyles. I cannot say that this card struck me as a picture of kindness. It offered very little to me. It reminded me of all the years of control, perfection and anger stored up inside me.
Then I started to laugh. Those things still happen to me. What the card offers so eloquently is to release those demons promptly and fully so they do not scorch me inside or out. When I am aware of my demons and challenges and deal with them I feel kind and can offer it to others. Inside work must be done first. This is the Spiritual aspect of releasing the old and finding your true self. Kindness is a direct result of this release. Note that there is no one being scorched as the pressure within releases to the heavens.
Seeking further guidance I reached for “Journey through the Gaian Tarot” by Joanna Powell Colbert. This lovely book accompanies the cards. And right there on page 164 for the Five of Wands it says ““We can let the circumstances of our life harden us so that we become increasingly resentful and afraid” says the Dalai Lama. “Or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. We always have a choice.”” And for that I am very grateful for the tarot. Tarot always show us the choices available to us. Tarot also has a great sense of humour.

Your comments are most welcome here today. Join in the discussion if you feel like it.

Tarot + Kindness

When I started my new life away from alcohol, working in psychiatric hospitals and jails, as a widow with two heartbroken sons I believed that I had to get tougher. Believe me I was pretty tough already. My councilor said “No you don’t have to get tougher, you have to get softer.” I looked at him like he was out of his mind. Doing that was the most unimaginable thing in the world for me.

Working with tarot cards helped me. The cards kept showing me where I was fearful and how that fear blocked me from living the life I wanted. The Hanged Man kept showing up along with the five of pentacles and then the five of swords. Enough already! I did not want to wait for anything anymore and I wanted what I wanted today. The Hanged Man reminded me that this was a slow, sacred journey. The term I use today is sacred waiting. It is a time of letting go of fear, finding the kindness in your soul to be gentle with life and then and only then do you move on.

Living from a place of kindness has allowed me to trust again. Trust myself, then others then Spirit. I am a slow learner. Kindness requires two actions. To give kindness is often easy. To receive it seems so much more difficult. That requires trust, belief in yourself, a feeling that you are enough and that receiving is a positive action not a sign of weakness. Getting softer took so much courage for me. I can tell if I am well by how kind my thoughts and actions are each day. If my reaction to something is being tough the tarot cards come out to show me where the fear is and what the solution might be today.

Kindness has yielded so many benefits. Where I thought that I had to do everything myself I have found community. Where I thought I was all alone I have found others just like me. Where I thought that I had to fix it I discovered the gift of listening and witnessing as a kind and effective tool. That is what the tarot cards do isn't it? They listen and witness our life and show us how to be who we really are. Tarot shows us our spiritual core and ask us to live from that center.

You might like to pull a card on what kindness in your life might mean today. Share it here if you like.

Tarot + Fearless: The card of the day

Fortunately, I was driven to help people and get out there with my tarot deck. I believed that I had something to offer that would help people when other methods were not enough. And so….drum roll please: I donned my imaginary Miss Fearless Technology suit. This suit comes complete with cape and tights. When I put it on I am about six feet tall and fearless.  I can do anything.

Eventually I overcame technology challenges and became simply Miss Fearless. Whenever I feel that something is impossible or too much effort Miss Fearless helps out. We begin by acknowledging the fear at the root of the problem and then ask if it is necessary or wise to be fearful of this thing. For this tarot cards are absolutely the best tool out there. A simple two card reading can help get the issue on the table rather quickly.

As I prepared to lead a discussion on the topic of “Using Tarot to be fearless kind and happy in life and business” at the upcoming Readers’ Studio’15 in NYC I pulled three tarot cards. The first was for: “what does fearless mean to me now?”.

The Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert called me to use them for this exercise. Fearless looks like this beautiful Nine of Pentacles. Fearless looks like: taking the time to enjoy nature and beauty, abundance and the gifts that I have been given. Fearless looks like: standing on my own two feet and dealing with whatever comes gently and confidently. Fearless is asking for help when needed. Fearless is belonging to community. Fearless is trying new things. Fearless is hosting a monthly TV show and standing up and presenting new ideas at conferences.

Heron often stands alone as does the woman in this picture. Fearless is knowing when and how to stand alone and when to be with others. Fearless is being comfortable in my own skin. Fearless does not require the cape and the tights very often these days. Staying grounded, dealing with endings and trusting that life will evolve just as it should is fearless. It is in short a beautiful thing! I encourage you to pull a card and see what fearless looks like for you today, in your life. Please pull a card and share in the comments if you feel so inclined.

Tarot + Fearless

Tarot: Fearless, Kind and Happy
My love for tarot started when I was about twelve. We have spent a lot of time together. Tarot has helped guide me. Tarot showed me the path. On that path I found out how to be fearless, kind and happy.

Fearless came first although kindness was tag teaming right along beside it. My love for Tarot had stayed mainly in the background. There was work to do, a family to raise, money to be earned, chores to be finished. In there the study of tarot found a little space. This was a time of gaining knowledge and studying the multiple meanings of each card. This was the academic side of Tarot.

In 2004 my world fell apart. My husband died, my sons and I were wild. I came to the realization that I could not stop drinking my beloved wine and that if I didn't do something I was going to be in trouble. I joined AA that year. I sold our home in 2005 and soon after realized that my career as a food service manager in psychiatric hospitals and jails was done after 32 years. Despite seemingly taking control of my life I was scared to be. Existing was a terrifying experience.

Tarot was a huge factor in me gaining wellness. Tarot beyond its academic meanings is a spiritual tool that will guide you if you listen. A tarot reading is much like the AA 12 steps. The cards highlight our fears and lay out a possible action plan if we choose to embrace it.
Tarot for me showed me my spiritual path which was sorely missing in my life. Tarot is a tool that I use to help other people find their path in life as it helps me. I wanted to help people. I could not work in the tough environments a psychiatric hospital and jail anymore. Tarot offered me a way to be fearless.

Finding people to share the gift of tarot with was my next big challenge. It was suggested that I get on social media and send out a newsletter. I was barely coherent in the ways of the computer. I almost quit a dozen times.  It would have been so easy to quit. But the Universe had other ideas and gave me a new cell phone. I could not answer that phone when it rang. The screen flipped and twirled and I could not find the answer me button. Other technology was challenging me because for everything I learned there were ten more things to learn. I was ready to quit. I sat at my dining room table with my head in my hands drooping and tired. Quitting was a sure thing at that moment.

Except that I didn't quit technology. I wanted more than anything in the world to be a full time tarot reader and help people. I sat up straight and said I can do this. I will ask for help and not apologize for not knowing ever again. I gave myself a name: Miss Fearless Technology! And I can tell you that I own technology these days or I figure out how. Tarot wanted me to work with it…and share it with other people. I became Miss Fearless that day.

Miss Fearless wears Red Shoes and travels the world and shares her stories. She has gone kayaking with whales and pet a whale in Mexico. (Miss Fearless is afraid of fish). She shares when she is afraid or down with others. Others respond by cheering and nodding. Being fearless has helped me find my spiritual path, my community and happiness. Miss Fearless had to give up being tough and soften into kindness. That was a big step.

Pull a card and see what being fearless could do for you. Share your thoughts here if you like. I will share my card on 'fearless' here tomorrow.

Finding my writing rhythm with Deborah Kimmett

Writing is a fun thing for me to do. Writing a book about Scrying my journey with the Crystal Ball has been torture! That is until Deborah Kimmett's Seven Minute Writer's Boot Camp. Deborah encouraged her online class to write. We wrote about anything and everything. She showed us that we could write! And then she helped each one of us write the story we were trying to birth. She got us to dig deep, share more and paint the picture we had in our heads. Deborah helped me see how long ago my journey with the crystal ball began. She helped me see how to share that story and make it compelling. Here is the link to Deborah's Seven Minute Writer's Boot Camp. A new one starts in April: http://kimmett.ca/home/the-seven-minute-writer/  If you want to write and do it better check it out.

Here is an early exert from the book that I have been trying to write for five years. Enjoy!
The call to witness
It had been a long two years since we found Mom dead in her bed on my brother’s birthday. The grieving process was not going especially well for me. One thing that I had learned at a very young age was that you don’t show emotions. Grief was not to be seen or heard. Life should carry on as quickly as possible. Mom wonderful staunch Scottish Presbyterian woman that she was always demonstrated that stiff upper lip, onward and with decorum personally in times of troubles. I suppose that is what she learned from her Mother. There were plenty of troubles in our home. Keeping us all together and moving forward was Mom’s greatest gift to us. Learning what to do with feelings? Well, you just didn’t do feelings if they were inconvenient or messy.
So I was floundering and at the same time pretending that life was wonderful and normal. Increasingly I was finding solace in the wine bottle. Our finances were in tatters. Our marriage was stagnating. Physically my digestive system had decided it was Mount Vesuvius and gave me no end of pain and discomfort. The Ice Queen now ruled my emotions. And yet, I would have told you cheerfully that everything was wonderful as I invited you over for supper. Because more than anything else the show had to go on.
They say nothing changes until the status quo becomes unbearable. And as the years rolled on one to another the pressure inside me to do something was increasing daily. I tried to get help. We tried all sorts of medications to settle my digestive system down. I went to church. I walked miles. I drank more. Nothing stuck. I wanted to be free of this awful pain. It always felt like something was missing and that I existed outside of the social and work circles that I was in. For many years I thought this was grief over the loss of my Mother.
Mom’s death was an ending.  It was also the beginning of a journey as I remembered life as a little girl at home on the island. The journey back began with a Tarot deck from Doubleday book club which eventually led me to a psychic development course where I encountered my first Crystal Ball.
Over the years amazing things have happened when I take up the Crystal Ball. Time and space have no real meaning when I am with the crystal. I am able to listen to the soul of the person I am reading. For years I have been afraid to do it or acknowledge that this is what I do.  Other divining tools such as tarot cards restrict you because of their rules and structure. Scrying is freedom. Scrying opens the senses. Smells waft by inexplicably, feelings long forgotten demand attention, a band strikes up a song and dancers gaze into each other’s eyes as they swish across the floor. Stories unfold as you scry. Some have happened others are to come. This is the joy of sorting out the message. To scry is to know nothing and everything all at once.
And finally you begin to listen to the soul who is speaking or sharing through the crystal. It’s what I did when I sat on the shores of the St Lawrence River as a young girl. Scrying the river allowed me to empty my mind and hear. It is the ultimate form of Spiritual listening for me. I suppose it is exactly what the Buddha and many other great teachers tell us to do. For me it comes with a crystal in my hand or the river at my feet. Recovering from my Mom’s death and all that followed took me back to this early knowledge this time with a crystal ball in my hand.

The greatest challenge has been trusting that this is a valid process. I worked in a Psychiatric hospital for many years and really know the dangers of being different. For many years no one wanted to hear this stuff. Over the years listening to people this deeply has enabled me to help them find that ever elusive peace for their soul. It has given me the same peace. I can no more walk away from it now than I could do without water. This work is a natural process for me. When I do it I am filled with contentment and joy. It fills me up where many people think it would deplete me. Scrying, listening, sharing with people their own story helps us both equally. It’s why I do this work. It’s why I share how to do it with you now.

Classes: Lenormand, Tarot, Crystal Ball Spring 2015

How about Tuesdays at Marilyn’s for a change!

Thank you everyone for letting me know you were missing the classes. I took some time off for two reasons: I was sick and could barely talk! And two I took a Writing Bootcamp with Deborah Kimmett that really got me rolling and excited about my Crystal Ball book.

Tuesday March 17th: Lenormand Grand Tableau study continues. We will trace the card through the layout until it reaches home again and see how that adds to the reading. As always it should be fun. $30 at 6:30 at my place *or pick and choose. See the package options below.
Tuesday March 24th: Elemental Array Tarot. Now if that sounds complicated it really is not. To really get Tarot you have to understand the four elements and suits: Cups, water; Wands, fire; Swords, air; Pentacles, earth. We sometimes forget how important this is. So we will study the elements and their home card the Aces. $30 at 6:30 at my place *or pick and choose. See the package options below.
Tuesday March 31st: Court Cards the masculine suits of Wands and Swords and how these suits could really end up in a fight with each other. How do the court cards act out the element? How do the court cards tell you about the personality traits of the client? Who are the court cards in a client’s reading? $30 at 6:30 at my place *or pick and choose. See the package options below.
Tuesday April 7th: Court Cards the feminine suits of Cups and Pentacles. Who are these nurturing people? How do they nurture themselves and others? What is the difference between a cup and pentacle? How do the court cards act out the element? How do the court cards tell you about the personality traits of the client? Who are the court cards in a client’s reading? $30 at 6:30 at my place *or pick and choose. See the package options below.
It took me years to understand the court cards. A reading full of court cards can still give me a bit of a panic! Join in and get to know the people of the Tarot.
Tuesday May 5: Crystal Ball reading or scrying. And I will share some of the techniques and ah hah moments that I have unearthed as I write my book. This class is really a great class if you want to know more about spirituality, connecting with the intuitive part of you and just jumping in and going for it! $30 at 6:30 at my place *or pick and choose.
